Research Interests

Matt's primary interests in Human-Centered Computing are twofold: (1) to engineer information systems which are grounded in social science findings; and (2) to harness computational algorithms for social science inquiry. His goal is to aspire towards a deeper understanding of human beings, both as individuals and members of communities, so as to seek meaningful ways in which computer science and engineering can improve people's lives in socioeconomic, psychological and other aspects.

Matt's interests in computer science cover technologies with collaborative, assistive and augmenting capabilities, as well as end-user programming. He is also interested in development microeconomics with a focus on education, labor and technology. The overall direction of Matt's research is shaped by his interests in moral philosophy and the philosophy of language.
