Marc Davis

Assistant Professor
School of Information Management and Systems

Prof. Davis' work is focused on creating the technology and applications that will enable daily media consumers to become daily media producers. His research and teaching encompass the theory, design, and development of digital media systems for creating and using media metadata to automate media production and reuse. He and his student teams in Garage Cinema Research are working on: Active Capture systems which automate direction and cinematography using real-time audio-video analysis in an interactive control loop to create annotated reusable media assets; Media Streams which provides a framework for creating metadata throughout the media production cycle to make media assets searchable and reusable; and Adaptive Media which include adaptive media templates and automatic editing functions that mass customize media and thereby eliminate the need for editing on the part of end users. Together, these technologies will automate, personalize, and speed up media production, distribution, and reuse, bringing about a "Garage Cinema" revolution in which people use motion pictures to communicate with each other every day.
