Livenotes: A System for Cooperative and Augmented Note-Taking in Lectures
Livenotes is a shared whiteboard system and educational practice that uses wireless communication and tablet computing to support real-time conversations within small groups of students during lectures, independent of class size. PDF

prefuse : A Toolkit for Interactive Information Visualization
To simplify the creation and customization of interactive information visualization applications, we have created prefuse, a theoretically-motivated software framework for creating a wide range of dynamic visualizations. We have built both existing and novel visualizations testing the toolkit's flexibility and performance. PDF

MultiView: Spatially Faithful Group Video Conferencing
MultiView adds a new level of spatial fidelity to the many-to-many video conferencing experience by giving each person in the conference a unique and correct view of the remote side. This new level of spatial fidelity restores many of the non-verbal and spatial cues like eye contact and deixis to improve the overall effectiveness of remote collaboration. PDF

Experimental Analysis of Mode Switching Techniques in Pen-based User Interfaces
We investigated five techniques for switching between ink and gesture modes in pen interfaces, including a pen-pressure based mode switching technique that allows implicit mode transition. A quantitative experimental study was conducted to evaluate the performance of these techniques. PDF

When Participants Do the Capturing: The Role of Media in Diary Studies
In this paper, we investigate how the choice of media for capture and access affects the diary study method. PDF

Location Disclosure to Social Relations: Why, When, & What People Want to Share
New location technologies present a difficult privacy tradeoff, as disclosing one's location to another person or service could be highly risky, yet valuable. To explore whether and what users are willing to disclose about their location to social relations, we conducted a three-phased formative study. PDF

Improving Aviation Safety with Information Visualization: A Flight Simulation Study
New advances in aviation sensor technology are introducing vast amounts of data into aircraft cockpits, thus generating a need for new data visualization algorithms which do not compromise aviation safety. We developed an airflow hazard visualization system for helicopter pilots by following user-centered design principles. PDF

Short Papers

The Role of the Author in Topical Blogs
In this paper, I present a study of the role of the author plays in the construction of topical blogs, in particular focusing on how blog authors make decisions about what to post and how they judge the quality of posts. PDF

ImproViz: Visual Explorations of Jazz Improvisations
ImproViz is a visualization technique for diagramming music that brings to light the signature patterns of a jazz musician's improvisational style. ImproViz consists of two parts: melodic landscapes show the general contours of musical phrasing; and harmonic palettes represent the musician's tendency to use a particular combination of notes in a given part of the song. PDF

Designing Systems that Direct Human Action
This paper presents a user-centered design process for Active Capture systems. These systems bring together techniques from human-human direction practice, multimedia signal processing, and human-computer interaction to form computational systems that automatically analyze and direct human action. PDF

Workshop Papers

A Visualization to Facilitate Productive Discussions
We present a method for viewing an e-mail discussion intended for use by participants during the discussion. The display technique is designed to help participants identify positions, arguments, and evidence, and make clarifications and corrections. PDF

The HCI Emphasis at UC Berkeley's SIMS
HCI education at the School of Information Management and Systems is focused primarily in the masters program. This article describes the HCI emphasis and the relevant courses currently offered at SIMS. PDF

Design Expo Paper

Advanced technology for streamlining the creation of ePortfolio resources and dynamically-indexing digital library assets: A case study from the Digital Chemistry Project
This paper describes the design process and general design principles related to two new pieces of technology: PRISM (a digital video lecture system with support for peer interaction and concept testing) and LOTIS (a digital library indexing system that uses intelligent agents to extract keywords, suggest learning goals, and dynamically package learning objects).
